Winter tyre symbols in a product listing: 3PMSF, M+S and the EU label

When comparing winter tyres online, read the symbols as separate pieces of information. The snowflake relates to a snow-grip test; the EU label also compares wet-road braking, rolling resistance and external noise. One symbol cannot replace the others.

Start with the sidewall snowflake

The 3PMSF mark shows a three-peak mountain with a snowflake. The European Commission explains that the symbol follows a specified snow-grip test. In Estonia, a studless tyre used as a winter tyre must carry 3PMSF, according to the Transport Administration. M+S alone is not enough.

Look for ice grip when relevant

An additional ice pictogram indicates an ice-grip test. It can help when your route includes frequent ice, especially for studless tyres. It does not tell you how that tyre brakes on wet asphalt, so check that separately.

Read the EU label as a comparison

  • Wet grip A–E: compares braking on wet asphalt.
  • Rolling resistance A–E: relates to energy use and driving range.
  • External noise: shown in decibels and a class. It measures noise outside the car, not inside.
  • QR code: opens the model's information in the EU EPREL register.

First filter by the vehicle's approved size and ratings. Then compare the complete markings of the exact models. For help choosing a tyre type, read our studded versus studless guide. Browse Koleso.ee tyres with those checks in mind.
