Studded or studless winter tyres: three driving scenarios

The question is not simply which winter-tyre type is “better”. Start with the surface you meet most often, then compare the exact models available in your vehicle's approved size. The three situations below make the decision more concrete.

1. Icy side roads and early starts

If untreated ice is a regular part of your journey, consider studded tyres and compare model-specific ice tests. Remember the Estonian use period: normally 15 October to 31 March, with an extension to 1 October to 30 April when winter road and weather conditions occur. The Transport Administration publishes the current rules.

2. Maintained city streets

Studless winter tyres may suit drivers who mostly use maintained streets. In Estonia, a studless winter tyre must carry the 3PMSF snowflake symbol; M+S alone is insufficient. Also compare wet-grip ratings on the EU tyre label, since rain and slush are part of many city journeys.

3. A mix of town and rural roads

For changing conditions, compare each model's results on ice, snow and wet asphalt. The ice-grip pictogram is useful when selecting studless tyres for icy roads, but it does not replace the separate wet-grip information. A tyre's condition matters as much as its category: check tread and damage before reusing a set.

Write down your usual route, tyre size and approved load and speed ratings. Then compare winter tyres at Koleso.ee by the exact size and the conditions that matter most to you.
